In the third edition, Zhang Wuji read about the origins of the Nine Yang Manual in the last page of the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. Guo Jing and Huang Rong did not pass the Heaven-relying Sword or the Dragon-slaying Sabre to Guo Fu because of her recklessness, choosing to give the Sword to Guo Xiang. The third edition added a scene where Abbess Miejue told Zhou Zhiruo that Guo Xiang was in the Sichuan province when Xiangyang fell. He did that because he was saddened by the deaths of Chen Xuanfeng and Mei Chaofeng. The techniques used by Mei Chaofeng, including the Nine Yin Bone Claws, had been altered by Huang Yaoshi to reduce their vileness in the third edition. The Eighteen Dragon-subduing Palms had been omitted. The map revealed the location of the Book of Wumu, the Nine Yin Manual, and several other manuals in the Peach Blossom Island, including several of Hong Qigong’s techniques. In the third edition, they contained a metal map to the location of the Peach Blossom Island instead. The blades of the Heaven-relying Sword and the Dragon-slaying Sabre contained the Book of Wumu, the Nine Yin Manual, and the Eighteen Dragon-subduing Palms in the previous editions. Both swords could only be broken by striking them together at the chips. The Sword and Sabre had a small chip a few centimetres from the hilt. However, the Heaven Sword was reforged from Yang Guo’s Gentleman Sword and Xiaolongnü’s Lady Sword. In the third edition, the origin of the Dragon-slaying Sabre remained the same. In the previous editions, both the Heaven-relying Sword and the Dragon-slaying Sabre were reforged from Yang Guo’s Heavy Iron Sword, which was left with Guo Jing and Huang Rong when Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü left Xiangyang. Jin Yong made notable changes to the titular weapons in the third edition. Kathy Chow, who played Zhou Zhiruo in the 1994 remake, will be playing Zhiruo’s teacher Miejue. He becomes the leader of the unorthodox Ming Cult, and later supports the rebellions against the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty. Aside from Mongol princess Zhao Min, Zhang Wuji also becomes romantically entangled with the Emei Sect’s Zhou Zhiruo, Persian princess Xiao-Zhao and his cousin Yin Li / Zhu’er. Some years later, Zhang Wuji finds himself in an isolated valley, and masters a set of powerful inner energy skills. Zhang Wuji’s parents Zhang Cuishan ( Li Dongxue) and Yin Susu commit suicide after refusing to reveal the location of the blade, which is currently in the possession of his godfather Xie Xun ( Hei Zi). The story begins with the prophecy that whoever wields the Dragon Slaying Saber and Heavenly Sword will rule the world. I have higher hopes for Tang Yan’s new employee Chen Yuqi, who was serviceable in Princess Weiyoung. Zeng Shunxihas been cast as male lead Zhang Wuji, though he clearly lacks the skills to bring the character to life. The new version of Heavenly Sword Dragon Slaying Sabre 倚天屠龙记, and is helmed by Jeffrey Chiang, the director of last year’s well-received Le gend of the Condor Heroes 2017 (my first reaction to the news was that Deng Chao’s version was only a couple of years ago, until I remembered it aired way back in 2009).
